There is something about the name Jesus.

Isaiah 9:6

Life hits us all at different times and we all deal with different things. But the Bible tells us something very encouraging about who Jesus is. What He brings when we accept Him and walk in relationship with HIm. There is something about that name Jesus.

Luke 1:30-32, “The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.”

Philippians 2:9-10, “For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Jesus = God or Yahweh saves. The lord is salvation

Isaiah 7 tells us a little about what’s packed into this the name of Jesus and who He is.

Isaiah 7:14, “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with Child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.”

Immanuel = God is with us.

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that who ever believes in Him shall not perish but have ever lasting life.”

Now Isaiah 9:6 takes it a step further and shares with us some insight into the characteristics of Who this Jesus is and what is in His name.

Isaiah 9:6, “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us, and the government will rest on His shoulders, and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Let’s look at these four Characterizing names.

  1. WONDERFUL COUNSELOR

Wonderful = Excellent, great, marvelous, causes wonder, amazing, astonishing.

Counselor = One who counsels, adviser, advice or instruction given in directing the judgment or conduct of another.

This is who Jesus is, He is our great adviser and counselor. Maybe you are stuck today on what to do, is it possible the answer can only be found in Jesus?

Look at the wisdom of His counsel.

Is it possible today you are in a battle and feel like you are losing? Is it possible it’s time to let Jesus battle and fight for you?

1 John 4:4, “You are from God, little children, and have overcome them, because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”

Romans 8:35-39, “Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril or sword? Just as it is written, For your sake we are being put to death all day long, we were considered as sheep to be slaughtered. But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us, for I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

3. ETERNAL FATHER

Eternal = without beginning or end, lasting forever, always.

Father = Creator, founder

Romans 8:15, “For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

4. PRINCE OF PEACE

Prince = Son of the King

Peace = Mutual harmony between people or groups, especially in personal relations. Calm. Quiet. At ease.

Philippians 4:5-7, “Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
